Cliff Hosking
Visual Artist
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cliff, born in Brisbane, has sketched and painted since first able to hold a brush. He won his first art prize aged 10 and sold his first art work at 13 but his art productivity was happily restricted over the years by his other great love - children. Cliff was a paediatrician with an international reputation in paediatric immunology and allergy. In December 1998 he resigned as Chairman of the John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle to allow him more time to paint and be with his youngest two children and retired from his medical career in 2008 after 46 years of practice.
During his early years in art, Cliff painted in oils and acrylics with some success. Seeing an exhibition of Turner watercolours in London in 1978 changed his life. “Those images haunt me - the luminosity of the colours are forever etched in my memory. Turner was a genius and those of us who aspire to competence in watercolour can still learn from a man who died 160 years ago.” Cliff spent most of his early career in Melbourne and was a Member of the Victorian Artist’s Society. (Charles McCubbin was a President of ‘Vic Arts’ - but that was before Cliff’s time!).
Cliff says, about his painting approach, “I aim to convey the beauty of light interacting with the atmosphere and solid objects in its path. A scene looks different every hour during the day and with the passing of seasons. Watercolour, that magic mixture of pigment, paper and water, gives me the tools to produce the vision I have in my mind”.
Since his first solo exhibition in Newcastle in August 1999, Cliff has had twelve further solo exhibitions, one in Sydney and two in Melbourne. He teaches watercolour at Duck Down Studio in Mount Hutton.
